why beat up pharma?

August 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

it has become such that nobody is willing to defend pharma, well, I like to point out they are not tobacco companies. maybe it is not clear, but pharma are trying to come up with something that will help our personal welfare.

see, the problem of bashing pharma is that they are under too much price control and are suspect to too many frivolous lawsuits. in the end, that means there are too little money for R&D, and fewer new products (I means the kind of stuff that will save you and me in one of those days, or at least vastly improve our life quality).

on these lawsuits, i am constantly surprised by the public assumption about the safety of drugs. driving a car will increase the likelihood of being killed or severely injured, yet nobody think they should sue auto firms. in any case, drugs are foreign substances to human body and there is guaranteed a none-zero probability that you will be killed if you take a substance foreign to your body such as a drug. drug consumption decision should always be a tradeoff between benefit and potential damage to your body. personally, i do not take any drug unless absolutely necessary. there is no such thing as safe drug, no free lunch, as they say. but that is not a problem anybody should use to get money from pharma.

the problem is not pharma, in my view, it is the payer(fed government, insurance, etc). i have some ideas on how to go about and do this, such as creating an artificial market by the fedearl government for new drug development such that the payoff for different new drugs is aligned with the welfare of society. i will try to find some time next year and write it up.
