from the lens of professors, there are at least two approaches that come naturally on how to raise their own kids. one is to treat your kids as your friends, and hope they will return the courtesy and heed your advice from time to time. the other is to treat them as pupils, and pass on your wisdom and experience as if teaching a course (with “exams” and consequences, etc). which one will work out better?

for a while I had been favoring the best friend approach, but now I have come to recognize the pupil approach may work out better in the end. we shall see …
