I have been thinking about this for a while, as it does present a very interesting problem. the question is why we sleep and dream. Besides more traditional explanations, I think it serves two purposes:
(1) it basically reprogram the brain, clean up the tempratory storage that used to store stuff encountered that day, either file them into more permanent locations, or delete them (write over them);
(2) it allows certain aspects (I will call them brainĀ agents for now) of ego, id, or superego (in the terminology of Freud) to release their steam and satisfy themselves in a hypothetic manner. as a result, they will not come out during the regular day in an undesirable manner. this probably has to do with the dreams. since the objective is to satisfy certain brain agents, the scenario created for this purpose can be completed far-fatched. I don’t see any evolution pressure to make the dream more meaningful. so my sense is not to read too much into dreams. the brain is simply try to create scenarios to satisfy certain brain agents, probably picking up whatever is more easy to use.
